The Russian Orlan suit has no independent means of propulsion, so Ivan Ivanovich drifted away from the ISS, unable to return. The Orlan suit’s systems continued to function for at least two weeks, as the last signal was received on 18 February 2006. Astronomers tracked Ivan Ivanovich from the ground until re-entry on 7 September of the same year, burning up over the Indian Ocean.
NASA and Roscosmos did not attempt or even plan a rescue or recovery during that time. Neither McArthur nor Tokarev faced any formal reprimand after their return to Earth, though neither flew in space again.
They strapped a radio to an old suit and called it Ivan Ivanovich. There was no guy in it, you can relax.
Nothing looks more lonely than drifting out into space.
